10 Percent of Armenia Population is Planned to be Vaccinated against COVID-19
Ten percent of Armenia’s population is planned to be vaccinated against the coronavirus; the vaccine will first be accessible to high-risk groups. Gayane Sahakyan, Deputy Director General of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, head of the national immunization program, said this to a press conference Tuesday, News.am reports.
According to her, Armenia is currently holding talks to get COVID-19 vaccines, there is a respective working contract with the COVAX Facility initiative within the framework of which it is planned to import these vaccines for the country’s high-risk groups in the near future, and now negotiations are underway on a specific timeframe for vaccine imports.
At the same time, talks are being conducted also with vaccine manufacturers to import a certain amount of coronavirus vaccines before receiving the main bulk, and some of these vaccines are expected to be available in Armenia by the end of January or the beginning of February.
According to the specialist, negotiations are currently in progress on vaccines from the Russian Sputnik V, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna Inc—whose co-founder is American Armenian businessman Noubar Afeyan—, and Astrazeneca, as only the effectiveness and safety of these four have been proven yet in research.
