Armenia President Decides to Not Sign Draft Decree on Dismissing Army's General Staff Chief
President of Armenia Armen Sarkissian has issued the following statement on the President’s decision on the recommendation to relieve Onik Gasparyan of the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia:
“The President of Armenia attaches importance to the urgent solution to the political crisis with respect to the dismissal of Onik Gasparyan from the post of Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia.
It is clear that the current situation is the result of the discord of political and military figures during and after the war, and the disputed commentaries, law-enforcement practice and possible gap in the law can’t be overlooked.
In his previous statements, the President of Armenia has emphasized that the speedy and constitutional solution to the problem is of primary importance for security and stability in Armenia and Artsakh and is an absolute necessity for maintenance of statehood, prevention of the future split of society, etc.
The President of Armenia has decided to not sign the draft decree. Simultaneously, governed by the Constitution, the President of Armenia will apply to the Constitutional Court with the request to determine compliance of the Law of Armenia of November 15, 2017 on Military Service and Status of Servicemen with the Constitution.
Staying true to his commitment, the President of Armenia will continue his steps to stabilize the situation and calls on everyone to negotiate in order to find a comprehensive solution to all the problems through the presidential institution."
