Italian Senate Criminalized the Denial of Genocide

The Italian Senate voted for the bill criminalizing the denial of Holocaust and other genocides, Italian news agency The Local reports. The bill was adopted with 234 votes for. Only 8 senators abstained and 3 voted against.

Under the new law people, who partially or fully denying genocide implement, incite or promote racial discrimination, will be sentenced to three years of imprisonment. The bill also refers to crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The Italian lawmakers mention, that this revision does not prevent the exercise of freedom of speech. According to Senator Giuseppe Lumia, a member of the Justice Committee, the adoption of the bill is a turning point in Italy.
