Student senate of the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) on Wednesday unanimously passed the resolution calling for divestment of $72.6 million dollars worth of University bonds and investments in the Republic of Turkey as an opposition to its crimes and continuing denial of the Armenian Genocide.
In the resolution , "A Bill in Support of Divestment from the Republic of Turkey" , it is particularly stated: "The Associated Students of the University of California calls to refrain from making any further investments in the Republic of Turkey until justice is done to the Armenian people through the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Republic of Turkey. "
Raffi Margossian, who is UC Berkeley sophomore and ASA (Association of Students Activities) executive member on the occasion particularly noted:
"I'm proud to see the ASUC take measures to hold our Regents accountable. I think it's outrageous that our tuition money is invested without student input. This bill sends a larger message that calls for the need for student voice in UC investments",- Asbarez reports.
