Turkish Academics Against Presidential System

23:04     9 March, 2015

Turkey's prominent jurists and political scientists are against passing to presidential system as suggested by the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Today’s Zaman reports. The academics even made a joint statement titled "Respect for the Constitution and Democratic Processes". In the statement the academics stress that presidential system will make Turkey undemocratic and hence will bring different negative consequences. They, instead, suggest continuing and developing parliamentary system, which will guarantee fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

With these objections to the ruling party's intentions, the academics also declared that they will continue to support Turkey's democratization process with complete determination.
