US deployed hundreds of the US armoured vehicles in Latvia after Russia’s full withdrawal from a European arms control pact, signed in 1990, Euronews reports.
On the occasion NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted:
"We are disappointed by Russia’s decision to suspend the participation in the Joint Consultative Group of the Conventional Armed Forces Treaty in Europe. We still support all efforts to have arms control and we believe that the treaty is important."
The deployment of the US armoured vechiles in Latvia are to be viewed as another attempt by the US to comfort the Baltic states that are increasingly worried about Moscow’s next move following joining Crimea to Russia.
