After over 1,000 academics from 89 Turkish universities signed a declaration calling on to end the ongoing fighting between Ankara forces and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused them of undermining Turkey's national security.
The declaration urges the government to restore a peace process with the PKK that was stopped in July 2015.
After an urgent meeting, Turkey’s Higher Education Board announced that the institution would do whatever it took regarding the academics, Sputnik News reports, referring to Today’s Zaman newspaper.
According to the paper, the body does not have the authority to directly punish the academics, but could force university administrations to do so.
