Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan’s prime minister, was on Thursday named the country’s acting president, according to a Reuters report.
The appointment comes six days after the country’s long-time leader, Islam Karimov, was declared dead.
Mirziyoyev, 59, has been serving as prime minister since 2003. He was named acting president at a joint session of the two houses of the Uzbek parliament. He will remain in office until elections are held at the end of the year.
