The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz noted that in Brussels it is necessary to discuss the possible use of sanctions against Ankara in connection with the arrests in Turkey of opposition politicians and journalists, LNR Media reports.
"By the end of this year we must pass a reform of the Customs Union, a member of which is Turkey. I can't imagine that after a wave of arrests of opposition MPs and journalists we will expand the Customs Union", — said Schultz.
Also, the speaker of the European Parliament reiterated the EU position on the possible return of the death penalty in Turkey. The EU official noted that if the Turkish leadership makes that decision, all negotiations with Ankara o the membership to the EU will end.
