The Italian region of Lazio has passed a resolution recognizing the 1915 killings of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as a crime of genocide, the website of the Armenian community in Italy reports.
In the measure initiated by councilmember Sergio Pirozzi, the local government extends its solidarity to the Armenian nation in the campaign for justice and protection of human rights.
Lazio thus becomes the 136th local government authority in Italy to recognize the Genocide,
"Standing by the Armenian nation is our duty, making history recognizable - an obligation which must be conveyed especially to the new generation to prevent the repetition of such tragedies," Pirozzi said in a speech, Tert.am reports.
The Armenian community has thanked the local government officials for their support to the national cause.
