Factions of NKR NA Call on Baku to Build Relations with Artsakh Based on Equal Rights

The factions of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic National Assembly issued a statement on the occasion of the 95^th anniversary of Shushi massacres. The statement reads as follows (non-official translation):

"95 years ago, in these days the Ottoman Turkey regular armies of expeditionary Corpus that entered Caucasus, outrageously violating the temporary agreement between the Musavat government of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic and the National Council of the self-determined Artsakh in the Yelizavetpol and the provinces of Baku in the former Russian Empire and instigating anti-Armenian moods of the local Muslim elite, attacked the Armenian neighborhoods of the city Shushi.

Around 30 thousand people were killed or were reported to be missing, the survivors spread around the world. The property belonging to Armenians - all residential buildings, administrative, educational, cultural and religious institutions, were destroyed and looted.

This greatest crime was planned and implemented to destroy the administrative, economic, political and cultural center of Artsakh, to change the ethnic composition of the ancient Armenian city, to deprive the Artsakh Armenians of the right of self-determination.

It is noteworthy that the actual destruction of Sushi took place on the background of the tragic event that took place in Western Armenia five years before the Shushi events and was still continuing – the Armenian Genocide, towards which the indifference of the international community led to new crimes.

Reaffirming the commitment of the people of Artsakh to develop their independent state for the benefit of future generations and interethnic solidarity, we

- condemn the 1920, March 21-26 Armenian massacres of the city Shushi, call them as a genocide against Armenians by the Ottoman Empire, the continuation of the policy of dispossession of Armenians,

- draws the attention of the international community on the fact that during the 70 years of Soviet Azerbaijan Shushi had turned into a center of Azerbaijani intolerance and anti-Armenian moods,

- confirm the inevitability of the armed operation of the liberation of Shushi and its exceptionally humanitarian nature, which prevented the brutal destruction of 50 thousand people of Stepanakert through famine, epidemic and continues bombarding as a result of full blockade,

- call on Azerbaijan to face its past, stop hatred towards Armenians and start establishing relations with Artsakh based on equal rights for the sake of regional peace and stability.
