Will AKP Win the General Elections?

Turkey's pre-election uncertainty and unprecedented events are still in progress. Taking into consideration the current situation, it seems that the main electoral struggle is between the Justice and Development (AK) Party and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). It can be assumed that the early elections scheduled for November 1 will be tenser compared with June 7 general elections.

Mutual accusations and terrorist acts have become the main component of the pre-election situation. For realizing his ambitions, that is the removing of Peoples’ Democratic Party from the political arena and changing of the parliamentary system into a presidential one, Erdogan pushed Turkey towards civil war and moreover, intensified it day by day. Despite the fact that according to the Turkish Constitution, president of the country must stay impartial, Erdogan continues to violate the law and breaks the presidential oath of impartiality.   

As Today’s Zaman reports Erdogan accused the HDP leaders saying that they deceived the people in the June 7 election, adding that society will not let deceive them on November 1.  This statement can be considered as an attack on the Kurdish party. Besides it is obvious that Erdogan plans to continue the civic war.

From this regard, during his visit to Germany, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtas, have made an interesting and correct announcement saying  that "either the AKP should change itself or Turkey will have to get rid of the AKP" to resolve problems, signaling that "CHP, HDP and forces, communities siding with peace, freedom and democracy, should be able to offer a democratic alternative power to Turkey’s society’’.

It should be noted, that the rating of AKP is going down. Compared with the June 7 elections as a survey from pollster Gezici showed on Monday, support for Turkey’s ruling AK Party has slipped by 1.6 points from June's election to 39.3 percent, which shows that the AKP's chances of forming a single-party government after November 1 elections have decreased. The society itself gradually comes to perception that Erdogan's party follows only its interests.

It is noteworthy, that the European Union's progress report on Turkey for 2015, the final version of which will be released on October 14, will express deep concern over growing violations of the rule of law and restrictions on press freedom, according to sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity to Today's Zaman in Brussels.

According to the sources, the report will include extensive coverage of these violations; the Kurdish question, issues in public administration, anti-corruption measures, media violations. It is stated that the criticism in this year's report is expected to be harsher than last year.
