Armenians Still Residing in Syria Need Additional Security Guarantees
The Republic of Armenia cannot be indifferent towards the security of its compatriots, be it within the borders of the Republic or outside them. The ongoing war ant the activities by the terrorist organization continue to present a direct threat to our compatriots still residing in Syria. In order to ensure their security we need additional security measures; the ones that can be obtained, for example, through the connections with the countries involved in the anti-terrorist coalitions.
To achieve this perhaps it is necessary, through the diplomatic channels, to engage in the active consultations with our strategic partner, Russian Federation, our friend, Iran as well as our Western colleagues involved in the struggle against Islamic State and other terrorist organizations.
Those consultation can at least refer to the following issues:
- the possibility and expedience of allocating the representatives of the Armenian community near the bases of our allies in case of land operations in Syria,
- The possibility of allocating the bases of our allies near the areas with densely populated Armenia residences,
- The necessity of presenting the interests of the Armenian community during the negotiations for the resolution of the Syrian crisis.
However in its activities referring to these issues the Republic of Armenia should not only have expectations, but also demonstrate its support. Consequently, it is expedient to consider the possibility of Armenia’s involvement in different humanitarian missions. Our compatriots, still residing in Syria, can also have their contribution in the fight against the terrorism in Syria, for example, by engaging in the same humanitarian missions. This will on the one hand strengthen the role of the Armenian community in Syria, on the other hand will give some security guarantees to the Syrian Armenians.
