Vic Darchinyan: I am Going to Artsakh to Encourage Our Soldiers (EXCLUSIVE)
"Armedia” IAA presents an exclusive interview with an Armenian Australian professional boxer and former three-division world champion Vic Darchinyan. He has also held the IBF flyweight title, as well as the undisputed WBA, WBC and IBF super flyweight titles.
- Mr. Darchinyan, you have declared that in several days you will visit Artsakh. What is the aim of that visit?
- I am going to Artsakh to meet our soldiers, to encourage them, to say that they fight, struggle for our Motherland and should be tight.
- During the April tensions you were abroad. What feelings did you have? Was the spirit of Armenia-Artsakh-Diaspora unity felt?
- Yes, it was obvious in Australia. All of us were trying to help as much as possible – some were collecting money, others were sending something to Artsakh.
Of course, all of us knew what was happening, that we had human losses. I myself could not but come and just in the place see what is happening. Of course, I am not a sniper, I cannot shoot and in this regard I cannot help our soldiers, but I want to be with our soldiers, to encourage them, to tell them to be cautious, to keep their heads below the bullets.
I cannot find words. We had a lot of soldiers killed – all young boys… I want our soldiers to be more cautious.
- Once you said that your activities in professional ring will soon end. What are you going to do in the future? Have you ever thought that if there was no sport what you would do?
- It is about 30 years I have been involved in sports and I have never thought that I could have done something else. I have never thought about it. As for my future activities, then I will continue to be engaged in sports and will help our sportsmen to fight and earn money, as in the sphere of sport, particularly in the world of boxing, I know almost everyone.
As there is no professional boxing in Armenia, I am going to open a boxing club in the US, where I will gather Armenian boxers from the whole world.
- Is there any planned fight in the coming months?
- Yes, in July I have a planned fight, but the date is not fixed yet. After visiting Artsakh I will leave for the US to continue there the preparatory works for the fight.
