Azerbaijan- Isreal Relations Against Iran?

i-hls.com

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the framework of his visit to Kazakhstan in October plans to visit Azerbaijan, according to the Israeli newspaper NRG.  As the newspaper notes, in recent years, Tel Aviv is interested in strengthening relations with Azerbaijan and other Muslim countries with Shiite population.

It should be noted that in the recent years economic ties between Israel and Azerbaijan has expanded: the annual trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Israel reached $ 3.5 billion, which mainly focused on the oil sector. Thus, Israel is one of the main buyers of Azerbaijani oil: Azerbaijan provides 40 percent of Israel's oil demand. At the same time Azerbaijan needs Israeli high-tech technologies in arms industry and agriculture.

However, it should be noted that cooperation between the two countries is not limited only with economic sphere. As the Israeli politicians emphasize, Israel during the Karabakh war (as well as during the April war) openly supported Azerbaijan, despite Baku recognizes the Palestinians' right to an have an independent state.

At the same time, relations between Azerbaijan and Israel, despite their strategic importance, have certain peculiarities. Thus, so far, no president or prime minister of Azerbaijan made an official visit to Israel - the highest-level visit to Israel was at foreign minister level. In addition to this, for a long time the opening of the Azerbaijani diplomatic mission in the Jewish State is on the agenda of bilateral relations. In this regard, experts point out that Baku is afraid  to show similar signs of rapprochement with Tel Aviv, fearing Iran's reaction. Tehran, naturally does not like the fact that neighboring Azerbaijan is improving its relations with a country, with whom they have a pretty intense, if not hostile relationship. And despite the complaints of Iran, Azerbaijan will not give up relations with Israel, as Israel supports Baku in Karabakh conflict, experts say.
