Freedom of Speech is Banned in Turkey

pikabu.ru

The recent developments in Turkey show once again that Erdogan leads the country towards dictatorship. After the arrest of leaders and 11 members of the pro-Kurdish opposition Democratic People's Party, a number of internet resources work was restricted. Particularly The TurkeyBlocks monitoring network has detected restrictions on access to multiple social media services Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. It should be noted, that this is not the first time that the Turkish authorities during the country's internal political developments or a major terrorist threat are blocking social networks, as those are the major sources in the modern world to organize nationwide campaigns. At the same time, the Turkish authorities carry out censorship of the press and television work.

HOwever, the interference in the work of the information sector by the Turkish authorities is not limited just by banning this or that incident reporting. Turkish authorities have targeted opposition media, which Turkey spares no effort to close. Thus, after the failed coup attempt in Turkey more than 160 media wre closed. And obviously this number is not final. The hands of the Turkish authorities recently have reached Cumhuriyet - the main opposition newspaper. The paper's editorial staff and some journalists were arrested on charges of supporting of Gulen movement. It should be noted, that it was only a day after the Turkish authorities have closed 15 outlets, most of them Kurdish media.
The policy of restricting freedom of expression by the Turkish authorities is critisized by the international community. "It is extremely alarming that freedom of speech and press are limited to again and again," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, expressing doubt about the legality of the arrest of journalists of Cumhuriyet. The Council of Europe and the US also expressed concern in this connection. However, this criticism does not affect the behavior of the Turkish authorities.
"According to the worldwide index of press freedom of the organization "Reporters Without Border”, Turkey is among the countries with the biggest regress. Turkey ranks 151 among 180 countries.
Turkey's current government policy suppose that all those, who criticize the government are either terrorists, or support the Kurdistan Workers Party or opposition theologian Fethullah Gulen movement. One can undoubtdly say that the coup attempt became a pretext for the Turkish authorities to start repressions and to "clean" their way.
