Iraqi Kurdistan: War and Internal Political Crisis Instead of Independence

EPA / UPG

Iraqi Prime Minister Haydar al-Abadi said that the central government forces have established control over all disputed areas. Al-Abadi stressed that in the near future the civil servants of the Kurdish Regional Administration of Iraq and members of Peshmerga will be paid salaries.

According to RIA Novosti, Iraqi military and Kurdish militiamen have already held three rounds of talks: Baghdad demands from the Kurds to transfer control over the checkpoint between Iraqi Kurdistan and Turkey and airports to the central government, and to reduce the number of Kurdish Peshmerga militias or transfer them under the command of Iraq

These negotiations are held against the background of deepening the internal political crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan. Few days ago Masoud Barzani announced his resignation as president of the autonomy. Although Barzani stated that, despite the results of the referendum, he would no longer renew his powers, it was obvious that if the independence was declared, he would not leave.

Opposition forces of Iraqi Kurdistan, who, by the way, believed that it was not time to hold the referendum, accuse Barzani of betraying the "Kurdish dream". As a result, the political crisis that is lasting for two years. deepens, and despite the ongoing struggle between political forces, none of them have a leader.

Thus, it can be noted that the Kurdish autonomy lost the struggle with Baghdad for independence. Moreover, this experience of Erbil has shown that, at least in the coming decades, it is not worth talking about the independence of the Iraqi Kurds.
