Due to the Agreement Between Trump and Putin a "Security Zone" Will Be Created in Syria
Recently, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in Vietnam Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump issued a joint statement on the Syrian crisis. According to the statement, the Syrian conflict does not have a military solution, and the political settlement should be found within the framework of the Geneva process.
The Presidents positively assessed the efforts to prevent dangerous incidents between the Russian and American militaries in Syria and confirmed their readiness to maintain the existing military contacts.
"The Presidents reaffirmed their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, territorial integrity and secular nature of Syria in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and called on all Syrian parties to actively participate in the Geneva political process and to support its success,” the statement reads.
Perhaps the most important point in the statement of the Presidents of Russia and the United States on Syria is the final agreement on establishing a "security zone" in the south-west of Syria.
Russia, the United States and Jordan have signed a ceasefire agreement in the framework of the G20 summit in Hamburg on June 7. The agreement envisages creation of a "security zone" in Daraa, Kunarea and Sueida, as well as on the Syrian-Jordanian and Syrian-Israeli border.
The agreement also states that security in the south-western Syria should be ensured by the Russian military, along with the United States and Jordanian armed forces.
This agreement caused a serious concern in Israel. Tel Aviv believes that it legitimizes the presence of Iranian troops and Hezbollah in Syria, including after the end of hostilities.
