Statement of Artsakh President Has Not Only Political, but Humanitarian Importance
The visit of Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan to the US was widely covered by media and became a subject of many discussions. The latest development was the interview of President Sahakyan, in which he referred to the return of Azerbaijani refugees.
This statement of Artsakh President, according to which Azerbaijani refugees can return any time, in case they recognize the Republic of Artsakh and its jurisdiction, is very important and symbolic. It has not only political, but also humanitarian importance.
By this, Artsakh President showed that in contrast to Aliyev, who calls the Armenians all over the world enemies and injects Armenophobia among the society members starting from school, Artsakh authorities do not consider Azerbaijanis their enemies. In essence, Bako Sahakyan said that Artsakh authorities and people are ready to accept Azerbaijanis, live side by side, if they are ready to recognize the independence of Artsakh and return to live there as Artsakh citizens.
Even if it does not seem realistic today, it still does not reduce the political and humanitarian leverage of the Artsakh leader’s statement. Artsakh people struggle for their self-determination, for the recognition of its independence, but not against Azerbaijan, moreover against Azerbaijani people. And the key to the conflict resolution, establishing peace and good relations in the region is the self-determination of Artsakh people, the independence of Artsakh.
