Artsakh’s International Recognition Continues

Azat Or

On May 22, the Australian Ryde City Council unanimously adopted a Resolution in support for the independence of the Republic of Artsakh. The resolution acknowledged and recognized the self determination “as the basic human right”. The resolution further recognized Artsakh Republic’s “sustained efforts towards creating a free and democratic society through the use of legitimate parliamentary and its continued efforts to develop a responsible government.”

It is noteworthy that the resolution highlighted the importance of Artsakh's involvement within the international community encouraging “continued promotion of humanitarian and economic support for the people of the Republic of Artsakh.” Such an emphasis made in resolution is more than natural – the fact that Artsakh is not recognized yet does not justify the unwillingness of the international community to support and defend the basic human rights of Artsakh people by directly cooperating with them.

Finally, the resolution “calls on the Commonwealth Government to officially recognize the independence of the Republic of Artsakh and strengthen Australia's relationship with the Republic of Artsakh and its citizens.”

It is important to note that the resolution adopted by the Australian Ryde City Council is not the first in 2018. Like previously, in 2018 as well Artsakh continued to develop its foreign relations at various levels including also the one at the city level. In the current year two memorandums of cooperation were signed - between Kovsakan Town of Artsakh and Anjar Town of Lebanon, as well as Martakert Town of Artsakh and Bourj Hammoud Town of Lebanon.  Both memorandums emphasized the importance of establishing social, economic, tourism, and cultural relations between the two towns via the joint-projects.

The memorandums of cooperation were not only limited to the Lebanese cities in the current year. Particularly, Friendship Declaration was signed between Martuni Town of Artsakh and Bourg-de-Péage City of France.  This declaration became the 11th in the series of declarations signed between the cities of France and Artsakh, aimed at further deepening the cooperation between them in various spheres.

In addition this year “Days of Artsakh” were held in various French cities like Compiègne and Decines-Charpieu. It is hard to underestimate the role of such events in terms of raising the level of the popularity of Arstakh abroad by presenting its culture, history, current realties etc.

Summing up it is important to once more highlight the importance of developing foreign relations at various levels which will help to make the voice of Artsakh heard in various situations, especially those of emergency, giving an opportunity to defend its rights and interests abroad.
