Kishida Will Become the First Japanese Prime Minister to Attend the NPT Conference
Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio is scheduled to visit New York from July 31 through August 1 to attend the Tenth Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), where he will deliver a speech at the general debate. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan reports. This will be the first time for a Japanese prime minister to attend an NPT Review Conference.
With the division in the international community over ways to advance nuclear disarmament ever widening, as well as Russia's threat of use of nuclear weapons in its aggression against Ukraine, the path towards a world without nuclear weapons has become more severe.
Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan believes that it is important to make realistic efforts under the NPT towards a world without nuclear weapons. In his speech, Prime Minister Kishida will demonstrate Japan's position attaching importance to the NPT, while calling for constructive contribution by the States Parties to maintain and strengthen the NPT regime.
