Council of Europe Stopped Its Cooperation with Azerbaijan

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, today informed the Committee of Ministers of his decision to withdraw the Council’s participation in the joint working group on human rights issues in Azerbaijan, haqqin.az reports in reference with Turan.

The statement reads as follows: "The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland informed the Committee of Ministers on October 7 of its decision to end its participation of the Council of Europe in the Joint Working Group on Human Rights in Azerbaijan.

Since October 2014, a Council of Europe representative had been attending meetings in Baku intended to resume the dialogue between the civil society and Azerbaijani authorities.

Despite this initiative, the overall situation of human rights defenders in the country has deteriorated dramatically.

The number of human right defenders imprisoned is increasing, and the Council of Europe receives worrying reports about unacceptable detention conditions.

In this regard the Secretary General has informed Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev of his decision."
