Turkey-EU Summit: From the Question of Refugees to Visa-Free Regime

On November 29,  the Summit of the European Union and Turkey took place, during which some very important and urgent issues of bilateral relations were discussed. First of all, the European Commission approved the plan for allocation of $ 3 billion in Turkey, with the help of which the problems of the settlement of migrants will be solved. In a statement, the EU said that the funds will be provided from January 1, 2016.

"It's not for Turkey that 3 billion euros are allocated, it is  for the Syrian refugees. Our main goal is to eradicate human trafficking and reduce the number of refugees arriving in Europe" the Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu said.

It should be recalled that the Turkish authorities have repeatedly stated that they have already spent  around $ 8.5 billion on refugees, while the volume of international aid does not reach even half a billion dollars.

Besides, in December, in the negotiations on Turkey's accession to the EU a new chapter will be opened. The subject of negotiations between the representatives of Turkey and European leaders: as planned is already determined, in October 2016, the EU plans to introduce visa-free regime with Turkey.

Turkey's Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkır said he expects progress in the accession process to the EU. He also said that the chapter 17, which relates to the economy and monetary policy will open in December 14-15. Bozkır, in particular, noted that Turkey will not be satisfied with the opening of only one chapter, and joint efforts will be made in 2016 - for the opening of another five or six chapters. Prime Minister Davutoglu, meanwhile, said that Turkey and the European Union should carry out two summits a year to speed up Turkey's EU membership.
