Adviser to the Minister of Defense of Armenia About the Destructed Azerbaijani Myth
"Armedia" Information, Analytical Agency presents an exclusive interview with the adviser to the Minister of Defense of Armenia, David Jamalyan.
- Mr. Jamalyan, how can the current economic crisis in Azerbaijan affect the military sphere of the country?
- In general, the situation is favorable for us. For many years, the Azerbaijani leadership tried to threaten us with their growing military budget, they were presenting their economic wealth as an advantage against us. It is on this wealth that Azerbaijani propaganda myth was built, according to which, sooner or later they will be so much superior tohave such a superiority over us, which will lead to a quick victory in the war against Armenians.
President Ilham Aliyev has not once made such comparisons, saying that Azerbaijan's military budget is larger than the entire budget of Armenia. Now we see that the situation has changed. The foundations, on which the propaganda myth was hold, now disappeared: oil prices are falling, the country has significant economic challenges - monetary reserves of Azerbaijan have reduced, manat has devaluated, overall prices have increased.
Azerbaijan will do everything so that the economic problems do not affect the military sphere, but they certainly do affect. Even in more favorable economic conditions, Azerbaijan has not succeeded in gaining superiority on the borders, starting large-scale military action and defeating Armenians.
Of course, the current economic problems are weakening factors for our opponent: the authorities can no longer boast of being so rich, so as they can have superiority over us. However, I always say and will say that now we must rely only on ourselves and not rely on the fact that in some circumstances, the enemy can show a weakness.
To sum up, I will note that due to the current economic problems, Azerbaijan's militaristic aspirations are becoming more and more unrealistic, which may make Azerbaijan accept the existing realities. An the true reality is that Artsakh - with its territory of 12 thousand sq.km - is the second Armenian state, and sooner or later Azerbaijan will have to get used to this reality.
