Russian Expert: the Position of Karabakh Can Strengthen During the Negotiations

The situation created after the war on Karabakh-Azerbaijan border can strengthen the position and involvement of Karabakh in the negotiations. The deputy director of the Russian Institute for Strategic Research, the head of the Moscow Center for Research on the Problems of CIS and Baltic Countries, Tamara Guzenkova said in an interview with "Armedia" IAA.

"During this conflict Nagorno-Karabakh presented itself in a unique way. It became obvious, that it has an combat-ready army that can respond to external threats, and also it showed an unexpected consolidation of the society. These are important signals, that show that in Karabakh important social, political community has formed  and due to it the position of Karabakh will strengthen during the political negotiations," Guzenkova said.

She stressed that after the escalation, the negotiations should be held more actively. "The result of these awful events will be the activation of the negotiations on Karabakh conflict -  either in the framework of the OSCE Minsk group, or in bilateral framework. Anyway, now ceasefire is reached and doing nothing after it will be irrational," Guzenkova said.

The expert thinks that this situation is directed against Russia through Armenia. These steps are planed to destabilize the internal situation of Russia and the international relations, in which Russia is involved. The beginning of the chain was Ukraine, then Syria, and the Russian-Turkish relations. "The Turkish leadership showed that they are not able to solve important problems. It took much bigger responsibility, than in could bear, and didn’t manage to overcome," Guzenkova said. It was only a few months ago Turkey was threating to provoke resumption of Karabakh conflict, and now it happened. "Now it’s difficult to assess he role of the Azerbaijani authorities. I think, they believed much the promises of Turkey. In this regard they decided to take a risk, but their game failed," Guzenkova said.

Now, according to the expert, the most important thing is that a ceasefire is reached, the status-quo is reestablished, no Armenian lands are given to the others. This shows that the conflict is not solved, but it has passed to a political stage. Guzenkova said a new phase will start not only in Karabakh conflict, but also in Russian-Turkish relations and the relations of Turkey with its neighbors.
