Self-Sufficient Azerbaijan Has Become Dependent on Stepanakert
Taking into consideration the latest developments, it can be assumed that Azerbaijan has entered into trade with Moscow over the question whether to enter the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union, or not, as a result of which it has become dependent on Stepanakert.
In an interview with "RIA Novosti" Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spoke about the possible prospect of joining the Eurasian Economic Union, not excluding such a prospect, but, however, stressing the "lack of motivation". "We are satisfied with both our economic and political situation," he said, at the same stressing that the world is changing and new threats and trends are becoming obvious. "In these conditions, of course, much depends on close cooperation with traditional partners," he said. Meanwhile, Aliyev stressed that nowadays they are trying to find motivation. "If the Union becomes attractive, many people will endeavor to it," Aliyev emphasized.
In fact, in his speech, Aliyev indicated that Baku is discussing the question of this "motivation" and is waiting for a better offer from its partners, in this case from Russia. And that proposal is logical to be in the context of the Karabakh conflict. In other words, Azerbaijan has currently started trading with Russia, if Russia is able to offer Baku the desired conditions for conflict settlement, Azerbaijan will join the Eurasian Economic Union, and probably even the CSTO.
But it seems that Aliyev himself did not notice that with such a questioning and with ''motivation search'' his country has directly become dependent on the will of Stepanakert. It is obvious for everyone that any version of the Karabakh conflict settlement is possible only if Stepanakert gives its agreement. Therefore, no matter what Moscow has to offer, the last word will belong to Stepanakert, and in fact Stepanakert will decide whether Azerbaijan will join the Eurasian Economic Union or not.
In addition, the younger Aliev, who with his characteristics and strategic thinking yields his father, did not consider another important factor, which simply could not be escaped from the attention of the senior Aliyev. The possibility of joining the Eurasian Economic Union and CSTO will depend on Armenia's vote, whether it will put a veto on it, or not. Thus, the politically and economically independent Azerbaijan currently depends not only on Stepanakert, but on Yerevan and Stepanakert at the same time.
