What Kind of Foreign Policy Is Macron Conducting?
The French President Emmanuel Macron will insist on tough Brexit negotiations. His economic adviser has mentioned that Macron does not want the UK to exit the EU, Daily Mail reports. Earlier, he had declared that he would not allow Great Britain to easily exit the EU. He had even called Brexit a crime.
Most probably Macron’s this stance is conditioned by his pro-European views, about which he declared also during his campaign. However, it should be mentioned that his statements on the EU are not always the same. According to many experts, one of the keys to Macron’s success is the uncertainty in his statements.
Despite the aforementioned statements, before the second round of elections Macron had declared that the EU needs reforms, otherwise France would think of exit. That is why he considers his presidency also a mandate to carry out reforms in the EU. Nevertheless, many consider Macron’s statements on the possibility of Frexit to be formal, the aim of which was to get the votes of those French dissatisfied with the EU.
It is noteworthy that Macron tries to strengthen his position not only inside the country. During the recent times the topic that Macron wants to go ahead Merkel, strengthening his and his countries position in the EU, has been discussed a lot.
By the way, Macron is doing this step by step, still cooperating with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It should be mentioned that Germany was the first country, where Macron visited after becoming the French President. In her turn, Merkel was the first official, who congratulated Macron for victory. Macron called the meeting with Merkel "the first cornerstone" put for Europe’s revival. Macron and Merkel have already stated their willingness to create a roadmap for the EU to deepen close cooperation in this tough time.
It should be mentioned that Macron tries to carry out reforms not only in the EU, but also undertakes steps for the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. According to him the aggressor is Russia and the unification of Crimea to Russia is unacceptable. In this context during the G7 summit, Macron declared that in the context of Ukrainian crisis he will hold "tough dialogue" with Russia. Despite this, after his meeting with Putin, Macron mentioned that he respects Putin, as the recent one tries to strengthen his country, not to destroy others.
In case of the US, Macron’s stance is clearer. The Presidents of the two countries agreed to cooperate on several issues, including in case of chemical attack on Syria. It should be mentioned that the French President has invited Trump to participate at the French national holiday, which this year will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary, when the US joined the First World War.
