Armenia Should Not Be Indifferent Towards the Massacres of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar

Reuters / Mohammad Ponir Hossain

In those days the massacres of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar by the authorities are at the center of attention of the international community. Some countries, as well as the UN, have criticized what is happening and called to end the violence. However, in the context of today's international relations, the issue gets a special political tone, because a Muslim ethnic group is being subjected to aggression.

The migrant crisis and terrorist acts of the Islamic State all over the world have become a source of a new wave of tension between Muslim and Christian worlds. But at the same time universal values and human life should be dominant, and the international community should take all possible steps to stop the violence.

This issue also has its important for Armenia. The Armenian society and the authorities cannot just remain indifferent to this issue and should severely criticize the violence. It should do so, because first of all today Armenia is struggling against crimes against humanity and urges to prevent their repetition, including by initiating a genocide prevention resolution in the UN.

Besides, considering the complicated relations between the two Muslim countries, Turkey and Azerbaijan, and the efforts of Azerbaijan to transfer the Karabakh conflict to a religious dimension, Armenia has the task to continually show the world that there is no hate towards Muslims and the existing problems are in a completely different plane and refer to specific states.

Therefore, we cannot remain indifferent to the tragedy in Myanmar and should do our best to contribute in stopping the violence and the massacre.
