Bako Sahakyan's Visit to the US Was Indeed Organized at a High Level
"Armedia" IAA presents an exclusive interview with the Secretary of the United Liberal National Party (MIAK), Member of the National Assembly's 5th Convocation, Naira Karapetyan on Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan's visit to the US.
- Mrs. Karapetyan, how would you assess Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan’s visit to the US? What was its importance?
- The visit of the delegation headed by the President of the Artsakh Republic to the United States can be called a big step forward towards the restoration of justice in the context of Karabakh conflict settlement. This is a classic political move to make the people, who live in the conflict zone, be heard immediately through the President of Artsakh. This is a country that despite being unrecognized, is well-established and with its level of democracy can be a brilliant example for many countries.
It is clear that Bako Sahakyan's visit and his meetings with the US high-ranking officials are still the beginning of a big process. I find it important to note that the visit was indeed organized at a high level, even the small details, such as the flags of the Republic of Artsakh and the United States in the Senate, were taken into account. Such a visit is of great importance in terms of ensuring the objective understanding of the Karabakh conflict in one of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair country.
Of course, during these years the Armenian sides have repeatedly voiced that the Karabakh conflict cannot be viewed as a territorial problem, but it is a struggle for the right of the Artsakh people to self-determination. But to hear all this officially by the Artsakh President and members of his delegation, members of the National Assembly and government, was a great step towards a comprehensive understanding of the Karabakh issue.
I think here we should also pay attention to the aggressive statements of the Azerbaijani leadership on obvious militaristic, aggressive and anti-Armenian statements by Ilham Aliyev, his family members, different MPs and officials. Great politics do not forgive this kind of rash. If a state supports peaceful settlement and simultaneously declares, for example, that the flag of its country will wave in a neighboring peaceful country (as a result of seizure, of course), that country loses its weight and reputation in international arena. Today Azerbaijan is perceived not only as a dictatorship, but also a hopeless and unpredictable unit.
- What opportunities do you see in activating Artsakh's foreign policy? What steps are needed to increase Artsakh's international reputation?
- We should definitely continue our joint work with other countries to have such visits and meetings more. Though full participation of Artsakh in the negotiation process is not yet restored, its presence in the international diplomatic circles is very favorable.
I also think that in parallel with the political work, the presence of the Republic of Artsakh should still be maintained, even if in informal way, in the international arena - social, scientific, cultural, sports, etc. presenting the world its existence, heritage, achievements. For example, recently "Artsakh: Hidden Treasures" exhibition was organized, which took place on March 13-15 in Strasbourg, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Artsakh Movement.
Such events are a great opportunity to make the international community get acquainted with the great potential of Artsakh, which, in its turn, will neutralize the invented statements of our neighbors. Ilham Aliyev has not understood that justice always wins - sooner or later.
