Poland puts pressure on Germany over war reparations

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski told Polish Radio that Germany’s refusal to discuss the issue of war reparations would be a big problem and a shameful step for Berlin, NEWS UNROLLED reports.

The Polish Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the German government has indicated in a diplomatic note that it has no intention of negotiating with Poland on compensation for World War II losses.

''This answer confirms the worst hunch, because there were also optimistic views that Germany might want to sit at the negotiating table and blur the issue by pretending to show goodwill during these negotiations. arrogantly,'' Yablonsky said.

According to him, the German state is responsible for the crimes of the Third German Empire, but he also says that the case was closed, although it was never brought.

''I think this answer, his character and style, will be a big image issue for Germany because we’re going to talk about it very loudly,'' he said.

''It will be a big problem for them. They will be very ashamed of it,'' Yablonsky said.

Earlier, Polish officials said they had asked Germany for 6.2 trillion zloty (about $1.3 trillion) in compensation for damage caused by World War II. In early October, a corresponding note was sent to Germany through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The German government has repeatedly stated that they do not intend to pay Poland: they believe they have already paid quite large reparations in Berlin, and there is no reason to doubt that Poland refused reparations in 1953.
