New Electricity Transmission Line Between Armenia and Georgia

The construction of 400 kvt electricity transmission line between Armenia and Georgia is planned to be initiated in 2015, said the Armenian Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Ara Simonyan.

On the first stage a transition power line will be built, afterwards the two existing mains will be connected to it.

“This will allow us simultaneously work with Georgia’s energy system”, - the Deputy Minister said.

As it is reported in the speech of the Deputy Minister, the second stage includes construction of the electric main from Hrazdan to Ayrum, where the second module of the transition line will be built raising the exchange capacities between the countries from 200 up to 700 megawatt.

The third part is linked to the construction of the new nuclear power unit in Armenia and, hence, is due to start in 2026.

Along with this, another 400 kvt power line construction project is implemented with Iran. Thus, as Deputy Minister stated, Armenia will get involved in regional energy integration projects.

According to the ministry’s assessment, the total project cost is 330 million euros. 300 million from that money will be spent on the construction of the transition line in the Armenian territory and the remaining part in Georgia.

The planned energetic infrastructure has a huge importance for Armenia, because our country is considered to be an energy exporter, having a surplus of electricity. Due to the future construction of energetic infrastructures and the development of energetic capacities Armenia has all the chances to become a regional energetic hub, which implies more effective regional policy and more economic benefits.
