Early parliamentary elections in Spain are assigned for September 27

The Spanish region of Catalonia will hold an election for its regional parliament on September 27. According to Catalonia’s head Arthur Mas, the two main parties’ representatives want to use these elections as a substitute for the referendum of independence which was opposed by Madrid.

This date was announced by the head of the regional government Mas at a news conference on Wednesday. This election, which will be held a few months before the general elections in Spain, is meant to bring back the issue of Catalonia's status.

At the same time, the two main political parties of Catalonia- Convergencia (Convergence) and Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (The Republican Left of Catalonia) are not running in the elections with a joint candidate list.  "We will run with different (candidate) lists but with a common national road map," Mas said.

The Catalan regional vote should be due 2016.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Prime-Minister Mariano Rajoy referred to Mas's statement as «verification and evidence of his failure".

Earlier, the Supreme Court of Catalonia stated that it is starting a case against the head of Catalonia Arthur Mas and several other high-ranked authorities. According to the statement Mas and his vice Joan Ortega, as well as Minister of Education  Irene Rigau were charged for violating the law, while conducting the quiz on independence on November 9, 2014.
