Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz died on Friday, reports BBC. According to the announcements of royal officials his 79-year-old half brother, Salman, became the king.

Abdullah was the oldest monarch in the world. He was born on 1 August 1924 in the family of King Abdulaziz, who was the first king of the Saudi Arabia. Throughout his life Abdullah held important political posts. He was the mayor of Mecca, commander of the Saudi Arabian National Guard - a post he was still holding when he became king. In 1982 he was named crown prince, and in 2005 ascended to the throne.
