Fazil Mustafa: The Azerbaijani Republic was formed only in 1918
The other day Azerbaijani opposition Deputy Fazil Mustafa in his Facebook page posted his opinion which reflected the history of the present Azerbaijan. Fazil Mustafa’s this announcement became a reason for mass criticism directed against him by the Azerbaijani society. The post of the opposition deputy was the following:
"I know only the single truth: the Azerbaijani Republic was formed only in 1918 and the present Azerbaijan is a successor of that particular republic. I also spoke about it during the TV program and anyone who is against this has to bring counterarguments"
According to Fazil Mustafa many Azerbaijanis did nothing but to invent false history and acts of heroism to make the Azerbaijani people be proud of their country. "However, our society needs the truth, and let some consider it sacrilege or revisionism, I do not care!"
It is interesting to mention that in the article of Haqqin.az entitled "Was there Azerbaijan or not?" which refers to the claims made by the Azerbaijani opposition deputy, the author states that although the Azerbaijani society critically reacted to Fazil Mustafa’s such kind of announcement so far there was no one, who could bring solid counterarguments which would refute his argument. The author explains this by the fact that in reality Azerbaijan indeed got his name only in 1918.
Notwithstanding the Azerbaijani efforts to fake their history the announcement of the Azerbaijani opposition Deputy once more proves that it is impossible for the Azerbaijani government to make its own society easily believe the myths about their own history. The territory of present day Azerbaijan was historically a region in Northern Iran, while present day Azerbaijanis derive from different ethnic groups such as Talysh, Avars, Turks, Tatars, Tats etc, who were otherwise referred as Caucasian Turks. Only in Soviet period Stalin decided to call those tribes residing in present day Azerbaijan "Azerbaijanis".
