In Turkey Violence Against Women Continues
Violence against women in Turkey is not a rare phenomenon. But the last incident shocked the whole world. A 20 years old student Ozgecan Aslan was raped and burnt to death in Turkey just because she was alone in a bus…
The burned body of 20-year-old student who had been missing for two days was discovered on February 13 in the river. Later on, three people – 26-year-old driver of the minibus, his 50-year-old father and 20-year-old friend - suspected for the death of Ozgecan Aslan were arrested in Mersin province, where the murder took place. According different sources, the driver of the minibus attempted to rape Aslan, and stabbed her to death after she resisted with pepper spray. Later he tried to get rid of the body with the help of his father and friend.
After the police found the burnt body of Aslan, hundred people took to the streets across Turkey, especially in Mersin – the hometown of victim – with the banners "Enough, we will stop the murder of women!" The protesters are sure, that it is not natural and normal that every day on average 5 women are killed in Turkey. They demand to strengthen the punishment for that kind of crimes. Some people even expressed an opinion that the real reason of an increasing violence against women in Turkey is the radical Islamic atmosphere created by the government. "Men say that women should be conservative. They think if they are not conservative, they deserve this kind of violence", - said one of the protesters, BBC reports.
Aslan’s mother Songul demanded the death sentence for her daughter’s murderers. Several ministers of the country also demanded to use death penalty against the criminal. Yet, it is unclear, what kind of punishment waits for that three men, but even Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu promised the family to "hunt those responsible for the crime and punish them".
