Everest - Earth's Highest Mountain

Mount Everest is the highest mountain of the world. It is 8,848 metres above sea level and is located between Tibet and Nepal. The mountain is named after an Englishman, John Everest, the British Surveyor General of India in the 19th century. The Tibetians call the mountain Chomolungma – "Mother-godness of snow" and in Nepal the mountain is called Sagarmatha – "Mother of Universe." It was the Norwegian alpinist Edmund Hillary and his companion  Tenzing Norgay that on May 29, 1953 for the first time climed the peak of the mountain and stayed there for 15 minutes. In 1978 the alpinists Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler were the first to climb the mountain without oxygen masks. The first woman to climb the Mount Everest was Lydia Bradey, 1988.

According to different sources about 150-200 people died when climbing the mountain. Today one should pay money for climbing the Mount Everest. From the Tibetian side a group of 20 people should pay $5500 and from the Nepali side many times more and the group should be comprised of maximum 7 people.

The climate of Everest is very cold. The average temperature is only about −19 °C on the summit; in January, it is usually −36 °C. Temperature here can even drop to −60 °C.
