Representatives of the EU and the US Discussed the Developments in Yerevan with the RA Ombudsman
On 2 August, the Acting Head of EU Delegation, Andrea Chalupova, together with the US Embassy Chief of Political and Economic Section Matthew Eussen held a meeting with the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia (Ombudsman) Arman Tatoyan. As it is put on the Facebook page of the EU delegation to Armenia, the interlocutors discussed developments of the last days, condemning the use of force and violence and emphasizing a need to resolve any conflict only through peaceful means.
The views on violations of human rights, freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and hate speech were exchanged. The excessive use of force and mass arrests by the police were raised, including a need for effective and transparent investigation of all alleged violations. The Human Rights Defender briefed on his and his staff members´ activities related to monitoring, visits to persons in detention and following up on individual cases. He informed that his office submitted documents to the General Prosecutor´s Office on launching criminal cases related to the alleged violations, including the reported violence against journalists.
