NKR Deputy: Artsakh's Today's Priority is International Recognition
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the proclamation of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, “Armedia” IAA has talked with a member of NKR National Assembly, Vardges Baghryan.
- Mr. Baghryan, what was the vision and expectations of the future of the generation that gained the independence? What do you think, to what extent are those expectations justified after 25 years?
- To say that we have met our expectations for 100 percent, of course, is not so, but surely we have some successes. Тhe most important thing is that we liberated our country, and today we continue to protect the security of our country. When we started the Karabakh movement, maybe there were people, who thought that just because our demand is fair, the issue should be resolved peacefully. But, as we know, it didn’t happen, we had to resist Azerbaijani aggression and to defend our homeland with arms, and moreover, liberate some parts of our historic homeland.
That is, no one thought that our freedom (actually it was a struggle of freedom) would be presented us on a tray. It was a struggle, and that struggle brought positive results. I repeat, there were omissions, mistakes, but who makes no mistakes, does nothing.
It is excluded that Karabakh will ever be part of Azerbaijan.
- In your opinion, what problems should Artsakh, as a developing country, solve for the near future?
- I think the number one problem, as I said, is the issue of security. This does not mean that all our energy should be directed only in this direction We are building a state and have a lot of unresolved issues - socio-economic and cultural. Gradually, maybe not at what pace that we would like, but we are building our economy.
Initially the movement had a goal and motto - reunion with Mother Armenia. I personally see this our ultimate goal. This is our goal, but we still need to strive for the international recognition of the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
Some of the US states have recognized the independence of our country. This process continues. I think that we should be much more active in this direction, both here in Artsakh, and especially in Armenia. Of course, the Diaspora has much to do in this direction as well.
This is our ultimate goal, and towards this should our actions be directed.
