Armenia doesn't have time for long-term solutions regarding security: Parliament Speaker tells Russian State Duma Speaker

Armenia’s delegation led by Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan was hosted today by Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, according to Armenpress the Armenian Parliament’s press service said.

The private meeting of Alen Simonyan and Vyacheslav Volodin, which lasted for about an hour, was followed by an extended-format meeting.

Addressing the Russian colleagues, the Armenian Speaker of Parliament thanked Mr. Volodin for the invitation and stated that the Armenian-Russian allied mutual partnership is based on a friendship that has been historically formed between the peoples of the two countries.

During the meeting both sides emphasized that the guarantee to constantly develop the bilateral ties is the active political dialogue at all levels, particularly, between the leaders of the two countries, which outline the dynamics of the cooperation in all areas. The key role of parliamentary partnership in the whole spectrum of the bilateral relations was highlighted, attaching importance to the activity of the inter-parliamentary cooperation commission between Armenia and Russia. In this context the sides touched upon topics relating to upcoming projects, stating that the works should continue on a systematic basis heaving a clear development vector with the principle of preserving the strategic partnership.

The armed aggression of Azerbaijan against Armenia has been one of the key issues that was discussed during the meeting with the Russian partners.

“Our visit to Moscow is taking place at a difficult period for Armenia. As it is already known, starting September 13 Azerbaijan has started a new phase of aggression against Armenia’s sovereign territory. The Azerbaijani armed forces have intensively shelled not only the Armenian military positions in several directions, but also the civilian infrastructure deep in the territory of Armenia. It’s a painful fact: we have 207 casualties and wounded”, the Speaker of Parliament said, calling the Azerbaijani large-scale attack on Armenia’s internationally recognized territory a dangerous trend with occupation goals by Azerbaijan in the CIS space. Commenting on the CSTO activity in this respect, Alen Simonyan said that the organization failed to respond to the aggression against one of its members operationally and effectively. “Armenia does not have time for long-term solutions regarding security”, he said.

Alen Simonyan expressed hope that the proposals made during the CSTO activities will bring their contribution to the de-escalation of the situation and the establishment of stability in the region.

Issues relating to the Armenian Diaspora in Armenia and thousands of Russian citizens who have settled in Armenia were also discussed at the meeting.
