Every Criticism in Azerbaijan May Become a Reason for Death
A new incident took place in Azerbaijan which proves that healthy criticism has no place in this country both on governmental and everyday levels. Journalist Rasim Aliyev was beaten to death in Baku only because he expressed his views about Azerbaijani football players’ uncivilized behavior.
Earlier we reported that in Cyprus the game between the football teams "Apollo" and Azerbaijani "Gabala" ended with a scandal. According to the Haqqin.az, Javid Huseynov, Azerbaijani team captain, showed an obscene gesture in the direction of his opponent, when he was celebrating his goal. Later Azerbaijani team explained his actions saying the incident happened because Cypriot team fans tore the Azerbaijani flag.
At first glance the incident seems to be an everyday one, but demonstrates the problems that exist between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Cyprus. The "antipathy" that they feel towards each other has strong political ground. In 1983 the Turkish section of the island declared itself Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is, however, recognized only by Turkey. Its brother Azerbaijan on several occasions thought about recognizing it but then changed his mind probably fearing from possible analogues with Artsakh.
Journalist Rasim Aliyev criticized football player’s uncivilized behavior on Facebook social network. And this became the reason to kill him. Commenting on the news, he wrote he would not like such uneducated and uncivilized player to introduce Azerbaijan in Europe. After these words he was threatened and then beaten to death.
His father told Haqqin.az that his son was killed by "Gabala" football team fans. It is also known that the brother Javid Huseynov, football player, was among these fans. He is now arrested and the player has been removed from the team.
