Iran Nuclear Deal Is at Stake
The extension of sanctions by the US authorities against Tehran is a violation of the nuclear agreement, Iran's Foreign Ministry said. "The extension of sanctions by the U.S. Congress is a violation of the deal. We will report it to Iran's committee, assigned for monitoring the implementation of the deal," Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said, stressing that the US political changes do not justify the violation of the deal.
The Senate voted unanimously on Thursday to extend U.S. sanctions on Iran for 10 years. The document especially allows the US President to impose restrictions against those who are engaged in the ballistic missiles program by Iran, supporting terrorism, as well as are accused of human rights violations. Now the document should be signed by President Barack Obama. Earlier his administration said that Obama will not approve the initiatives that might undermine the nuclear deal signed with Iran.
It should be noted that new sanctions are not economic or financial. According to the Republican Congressmen the extension of the sanctions will allow the President-elect set new sanctions against Iran more easily, if it’ll be necessary. For this reason Obama recently extended for one year action of the sanctions against Tehran of 1979. Therefore, it is possible that Obama will support this initiative.
It should be noted that such preventive measures by the United States threaten the implementation of the nuclear deal. And in such atmosphere of distrust Iran is developing a plan of action in case of failure of the nuclear deal with the West.
"When we were negotiating, we always take into account the situation that JCPOA- could fail. We have done everything possible to be ready for it. 1.5 years later, we can achieve large-scale uranium enrichment. But we would prefer not to damage the nuclear deal," Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization said.
Iran's nuclear deal is under threat not only because of the renewal of sanctions: US President-elect Donald Trump thinks, that the deal with Iran is "disgrace for the US." Trump has already asked to review and make changes in the agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
In any case it is early to make predictions in this regard, because the candidates after his appointment very often moderates the campaign opinions.
