Ukrainian Crisis: US General in NATO Speaks for Political Solution

The US Air Force General Philip Breedlove, who is also a top commander in NATO, stated that any foreign attempt to arm Ukraine with destructive defense weapons will make Russia angrier. This was mentioned during his interview to the Associated Press on February 5 in Brussels in the framework of the NATO defense ministers’ meeting.

Breedlove seems to be concerned by the possible US move to provide Ukraine with necessary military weapons against, as the source reports, "Russian-backed" separatists nearby Ukraine’s eastern/southeastern border. The NATO official is showing a way that should lead the conflict to the political solution rather than the military one.

It is noteworthy that already several NATO member-states such as Canada, Germany and France have recently demonstrated a more moderate stance and expressed eagerness to provide Ukraine with humanitarian aid rather than arm it in the current conflict. "Weapons deliveries would be a fire accelerant. […] And it could give the Kremlin the excuse to openly intervene in this conflict", quotes the words of Ursula von der Leyen, German Defense Minister, Associated Press.

As western media report, although Breedlove and some other prominent figures in the US politics believe that military actions are no solution to the critical situation in Ukraine, they still speak for the fact that the latter preserves the right of self-defense.
