Chinese Demand the Reincarnation of Dalai Lama
The chairman of the Committee on Ethnic and Religious Affairs of the Chinese National People's Congress of the PRC Zhu Weiqun announced that Tibetan spiritual leader - the Dalai Lama XIV, who since 1959 has been in exile and now lives in Northern India, is becoming less influential not only in Tibet but also outside it.
It should be reminded that a few years ago the Dalai Lama disowned the title of a Tibetan political leader and stayed only the spiritual leader of Tibetans. Thereafter, he announced that before his death he will choose his successor himself, thereby abandoning the tradition which exists more than 700 years. After announcing that he will break the chain of rebirths, a Chinese official accused the Dalai Lama for “betraying” Tibetan religion and traditions.
According to Tibetan tradition, upon death the soul of the Dalai Lama will be reincarnated in the body of a child, whom other lamas will find combining a variety of signs. The Dalai Lama XIV, who will be 80 in July, said that his soul may dwell in a child, born outside of Tibet. This approach does not satisfy the Chinese leaders who announce that next Dalai Lama could not be considered a leader of Tibetans, without the consent of Beijing.
The Dalai Lama is concerned by the fact that the Chinese authorities may put in the post of the spiritual leader whomever they want, as happened 10 years ago, when one of the proclaimed Lamas was kidnapped by the Chinese, and instead of him the authorities brought their own person in the post of lama.
