EU Gives Green Light to Fight Against Smuggler Boats in the Mediterranean

The EU Foreign and Defense ministers have given a green light to the mission to fight against people smugglers operating in the Mediterranean. This project is a reaction to the huge number of migrants from Africa and countries of the Middle East, who try to illegally penetrate to Europe.

Head of the EU’s External Action Service Federica Mogerini hopes that a full and targeted destruction of the boats of smugglers by the EU will start from June this year. The operation will be comprised of 3 phases: information gathering, tracing and detection of boats and their direct destruction.

The aim of the mission is to break the business model, which turned deployment of people through the Mediterranean into a financially attractive job.

Brussels intends to get the UN approval which will suppose a special resolution of the Security Council. "Nothing will be organized without a mandate from the UN",- said Austrian Defense minister Gerald Clug.
