Biblical David memorial honoring victims of 1999 Oct. 27 terror attack to be open for public

The memorial honoring the memory of the 1999 Armenian parliament shooting victims will be open for the public on October 27, starting from 13:30, Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan’s advisor Vahan Kostanyan said on Facebook.

The location of the memorial – an area within the park surrounding the parliament building -  is usually closed.

The monument is called Biblical David and was inaugurated in 2009. It is a copy of Yervand Kochar’s 1953 eponymous work.

Sunday, October 27th will mark the 20th anniversary of the terror attack, Armenpress reports.

On October 27, 1999 a group of five armed gunmen led by Nairi Hunanyan stormed into the parliament while it was in session and assassinated Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Speaker Karen Demirchyan, Deputy Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, as well as three lawmakers and a Cabinet member. The gunmen held the remaining MPs hostage until surrendering to authorities the next day.

The five perpetrators, which include Hunanyan’s younger brother and uncle, were sentenced to life in prison in 2003.
