Turkey Needs a New Constitution and a Presidential System
Both the President and the Prime Minister of Turkey have begun talking about the need of having a new Constitution and a presidential system. Particularly, the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that Turkey needs a new Constitution, reports Trend referring to TRT Haber TV. According to him the parliamentary elections that will be held on June 7 this year, will serve as a momentum for the adoption of a new Constitution. Erdoğan mentioned that the current Constitution of Turkey does not correspond to the requirements of the country. Earlier the Turkish Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdağ also spoke about the need of adopting a new Constitution.
In his turn the Prime Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu mentioned that a new Constitution is needed for democratizing the country. Davutoglu tried to convince that despite the claims of the opposition, neither the President, nor him want to centralize all power in their hands and the adoption of the presidential system will not lead to the establishment of "tyranny" in Turkey.
"Some people argue that the presidential system will create authoritarianism. Can you prove that? Those who a little bit understand of politics know that democracy is found both in presidential and parliamentary systems. In the studies on comparative politics both of them are characterized as democratic systems. Authoritarian deviations may also occur in the parliamentary system," – Hurriyet Daily News quotes Davutoglu’s words. As an example of an authoritarian leader that came out of parliamentary system, Davutoglu mentioned Hitler.
Referring to the coming parliamentary elections Davutoglu stressed that he hopes "to constitute a majority and change the Constitution, which while reading he sometimes gets angry."
