Brzezinski: Greece Can Paralyze NATO

The former US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski in his interview to Poland's Dziennik Gazeta Prawna warned of a Moscow-friendly Greece that according to him "could paralyze NATO's ability to react to Russia aggression."

On the occasion Brzezinski noticed that Greek officials did not hide their prospect of turning to Russia  or China for help in case loan talks with the EU end in failure. Former US National Security Advisor explained his worries by the fact that Athens could use its veto to slow the alliance's response in case of Russia's possible further actions in Baltic member states.

According to Brzezinski in this sense the most potential targets for Russia is Poland or  former Soviet states such as Moldova, Georgia and oil-rich Azerbaijan.

Having in mind NATO's Article 5, which gives  the  alliance the right to respond collectively if any of its members is attacked, Brzezinski  noted:

"But NATO is bound by the principle of unanimity.  The alliance could be paralyzed for some time...namely by Greece, which is a friend of Russia and wields veto power."
