Gohar Iskandaryan: the Agreement with Iran is the Result of "Acceptable Compromises"
After eight days of Marathon talks, Iran and the six world powers came to an agreement on the future of the Iranian nuclear program. However, there is no confidence for the implementation of this agreement.
"Currently, there is quite a tense situation and if one of the sides makes a mistake, the other will withdraw," – Gohar Iskandaryan, en expert on Iranian affairs said in a talk with "Armedia" IAA.
The expert called this agreement a serious achievement. "This is already valuable. There is a certain agreement that if Iran fulfills these agreements, the western countries will ease sanctions and new ones will not be applied," – Iskandaryan mentioned, adding that irrespective whether these agreements would be implemented or not, it brings some certainty in the upcoming months.
In a talk with "Armedia" IAA Gohar Iskandaryan also mentioned that the agreement was possible due to "acceptable compromises" for the sides. "Actually it is obvious that one of the sides has compromised, while the other gained more, but it is not important. The important thing is that they have come to an agreement. The art of negotiations is that one side compromises, so as it is possible to come to an agreement. But these were acceptable compromises for the sides. They have not compromised more than they should have. Iran was able to defeat its main aim – in the framework of this agreement Iran will continue uranium-enrichment for peaceful means," – Gohar Iskandaryan said.
Referring to the question, which side benefits from this agreement, Iskandaryan mentioned that "signing the agreement was in the interests of both sides, as sanctions were really strangling the economy of Iran and the deal was needed for getting a "fresh air." The Agreement was also important for the US to be able to know what is going on in Iran and to make the Iranian nuclear program more transparent, as Israel was exaggerating this question saying that the Iranian nuclear program is a serious threat for regional security."
As for Armenia, the expert is sure, that the agreement has also much importance for Armenia. "First of all, the sanctions against Iran even did not directly affect, but has an impact on the economy of Armenia. However, the most important thing for us is having stability in the region. As we know the option of military intervention was also discussed in the Iranian nuclear talks. These kinds of developments for Armenia, which has tense relations with its two neighbors – Turkey and Azerbaijan, can have quite serious consequences," – Iskandaryan stressed.
