Merkel Leaves Doors Open for Greece
Notwithstanding the Merkel’s declaration that a last-minute deal to save Athens is ruled out, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is willing to keep the door of Europe open for talks with Greece beyond Tuesday midnight’s deadline for the current bailout program, Sputnik News reports.
"Tonight, exactly at 12:00 p.m. Central European Time [22:00 GMT], the program runs out. And I’m aware of no strong indications to the contrary. The door stays open."
Previously the eurozone finance ministers refused to extend the financial lifeline to Greece past June 30, after Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called a Sunday referendum on bailout terms set forth by the international creditors.
