French Court Dismissed Baku's Claim Against French Reporters That Called Azerbaijan "Dictatorship"

Golos Armenii

The French Nanter's court has dismissed Baku's claim against France 2 TV reporters Elise Lucet and Laurent Richard, Libe'ration reports. To remind, Baku accused them of defamation because they called Azerbaijan "dictatorship".

Elise Lucet and Laurent Richard described Azerbaijan as a dictatorship during the program "Cash Investigation" on September 7, 2015.

The chairman of the court said: "The aim of the law on press freedom is to provide speech freedom and prevent the state from prosecuting a person". The Court found that the Criminal Code was strictly interpreted and the Caucasus state "has no more rights than the French state" and recognizes the claim unacceptable.

The lawyers of "France Télévisions" and two journalists welcomed the court's decision. Lawyer Virginie Marquet called the court decision "very interesting", highlighting that the court recognized that acting against a citizen, moreover, a journalist would seriously hurt freedom of expression. The lawyer noted that this decision put an end to all the possibilities of political censorship of journalists.
